Fly ash is the finely divided residue obtained as a by-product from the combustion of pulverized coal in electric power generation plants. Fly ash can be produced by coal-fired electric and steam generating plants.
Fly Ash can be classified into two types, class F and class C depending on its content and resistance to chemical attack. In production of fly ash, coal is pulverized and blown with air into the boiler’s combustion chamber where it is ignited and heated to produce molten mineral residues.
The residues are cooled by using boiler tubes that extract heat from the boiler to harden the residue and form ash. Coarse ash or bottom ash is found in the bottom of the combustion chamber, while the lighter fine ash particles also known as fly ash is suspended in the flue gas.
Before exhausting flue gas, fly ash is removed with particulate emission control devices including electrostatic precipitators or filter fabric bag-houses.
Fly ash is used in various highway engineering applications such as portland cement concrete, flowable fills, asphalt fillers, structural & flowable fills, grouts and soil & road base stabilization.
Particle size distribution and spherical shape and of fly ash improves the fluidity of flowable fill and grout and makes it a good mineral filler in hot mix asphalt applications.
